不知火海に注ぐ砂川と旧薩摩街道が交わる場所にある小川町商店街。かつては海岸線が近く、海と山の産物が集まる地域経済の要所として栄えました。その後、街道沿いの宿場町としても発展し、江戸時代末期から明治時代に建てられた貴重な町家が今でも数軒残っています。
その一つである塩屋（旧岩崎家住宅）は、明治39年（1906）に反物類を商う呉服屋として創建されました。座敷の欄間や天井に施された装飾や大径の梁を多用した小屋組が特徴的であり、華やかな意匠と構造美を兼ね備えた建築と外壁の漆喰塗りの白壁が創建当時の趣を伝える、質の高い町家です。

One notable example is the Shioya (former Iwasaki Residence), established in 1906 (Meiji 39) as a kimono shop specializing in textiles. Its design is characterized by decorative transoms and ceilings in the tatami rooms, as well as a structural framework featuring large wooden beams. The ornate craftsmanship and structural elegance, combined with the white plastered exterior walls, preserve the aesthetic of its original construction, making it a fine example of high-quality townhouses from the era.
